Delegate Selection Procedure

A demanding selection procedure has been put in place to identify and select those leaders of youth who are invited to take part in the Generations For Peace Pioneer Certification Programme, and eventually, become our Pioneers. Delegates are nominated through the network of local partner organisations or directly by existing Generations For Peace Pioneers. In order to successfully complete selection, a potential applicant must complete a set of questions and case studies assembled in the Generations For Peace Pre-Camp Workbook, as well as phone interviews, and a reference check.

In order to be considered for selection, the potential applicant must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Leadership

  • The applicant will possess and demonstrate leadership qualities including the capacity to inspire and lead others, as well as a commitment to learn from others.
  • The applicant will possess a defined vision for the community [with which the applicant will work] that reflects its assets and needs, and will demonstrate a clear plan by which that vision can be achieved.

Valuing

  • The applicant will be respectful of all backgrounds and ideologies, and be able to interact and work with all people regardless of their background.
  • The applicant will possess and demonstrate the capacity to develop a teaching approach based on the community needs.

Critical Thinking

  • The applicant will demonstrate awareness and in-depth knowledge of the existing issues the community is facing [with which the applicant will work], including the knowledge and critical analysis of solutions currently implemented in the community.
  • The applicant will demonstrate the ability to develop and innovative approach to respond to needs within the community; the approach will have to clearly identified immediate, intermediate and final outcomes, and be scalable and sustainable.

Problem Solving

  • The applicant will possess the capacity to analyse a situation, formulate and weigh alternatives, and chose a solution to respond to needs within the community.

Interaction & Collaboration

  • The applicant will possess honesty and integrity in all relational management responsibilities.
  • The applicant will demonstrate the capacity to put in place strategies to generate support and initiate solutions for the betterment of the community.
  • The applicant will possess work and/or volunteer experiences in projects that have targeted children and/or youth; the projects based on sport (development of sport and/or sport for development) will be an additional advantage.
  • The applicant will possess the capacity to establish and maintain partnerships.

In addition, the potential applicant will:

  • Be a true believer in peace building and peace in general and be able to demonstrate it through his/her previous work
  • Be committed to the values and principles of Generations For Peace
  • Be accepting of all backgrounds and ideologies, and able to deal and work with different people
  • Be a team player
  • Be respected in the community as a leader by various levels of society
  • Be at minimum of 21 years and a maximum of 55 years of age
  • Have tertiary education qualifications: minimum undergraduate degree; graduate qualifications preferred
  • Have proficiency in both oral and written English
  • Have good communication skills
  • Have proven track record of activities and work experience in voluntary work or work in the civil community; experience in working with children and youth preferred
  • Have good understanding of his/her community and the type of conflicts occurring there
  • Have easy access to the target population (children and youth, women, persons with various types of disabilities etc.)
  • Have access to community resources (human, financial, technical, facilities)
  • Have attitude of a learner, evidenced by ongoing personal development
  • Have solid references
