In Nigeria, a lack of opportunities severely limits women’s abilities to demonstrate the roles they can play in national development and peace building, both at the community and national levels. Ongoing political, religious, and ethnic violence continues to affect many people in Kaduna, Northern Nigeria, especially women and girls.

Joy is among a group of committed volunteers who work in their own communities to empower women with skills to escape from and transform the ongoing cycles of violence they face. Their focus is an Empowerment for Peace Programme, which focuses on critical skills for women; empowering them to be change-makers for peace in their communities.

Volunteering at Generations For Peace has given me the opportunity to touch the lives of women and girls, by helping them recognise their capabilities and become leaders. My capacity, skills and knowledge have grown, enabling me to build peace in my community.
