Dareen Al-Khoury, PHD
Communications Director
Dareen joined Generations for Peace in January 2022 as the Communications Director. In her position, she is responsible for developing cohesive communications strategies as she leads a diversely-skilled communications team towards proactiveness in creating quality, compelling content that enhances the knowledge and engagement of staff members, volunteers, donors, partners, media, and the public. In her position, she works closely with the GFP-Institute to support the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based research findings and with the programmes and fundraising departments to enhance donor recognition and visibility and to showcase impact.
Originally from Jordan, Dareen holds a PhD in the Analysis of Social and Economic Processes from the University of Milano Bicocca in Italy and a master’s degree in Communications, Media, and Advertising from Leicester University in the United Kingdom. Her PhD research focused on exploring new methodologies for the analysis of social, cultural, and economic factors that enhance the susceptibility of youth in Jordan towards violence and extremism. Her master’s thesis focused on the role of satire in youth political participation.
Throughout her research and communications career, Dareen has led the development of communications strategies and campaigns and managed the creation of communications content for local and international organizations serving diverse audiences and stakeholders across the political, social advocacy, health, and cultural arenas. She has conducted rigorous research focusing on communications, media, and discourse analysis, collaborating with international NGOs from the Middle East, the United States, and Europe for various projects conducted in Iraq, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Lebanon, Algeria, and Jordan. She has led research on measuring trust in information, interfaith-dialogue and conflict-sensitive journalism, cyber harassment in West Mosul, media literacy among illiterate communities in Tal Afar and Fallujah, pre-service teacher education in Jordan, and extremist organizations discourse analysis.
Dareen believes in life-long learning. She enjoys connecting with people, and taking long walks in nature.
