University of Jordan Students establish Generations For Peace Club for Conflict Transformation29 October, 2013 – Amman, Jordan: HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein, Founder and Chairman of Generations For Peace, and HE Prof. Ekhleif Tarawneh, University of Jordan President, today presented certificates to students who have established a Generations For Peace Club for Conflict Transformation at the University of Jordan. The Club was established by students concerned about escalating cases of violence on campus. Having formed the Club with the approval of the University Administration, the students will now run a variety of activities for students on campus, to reduce violence and transform conflict situations.

The student-led Club is supported by Generations For Peace as part of a pilot programme to address “Violence in Universities”. The programme is implemented in collaboration with Youth for Youth Foundation, and supported by the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI).

Last September, 20 students from the University of Jordan received four days of training at Generations For Peace headquarters in Amman. They are now applying their training to organise a range of regular activities for students on campus, aimed at solving problems that might arise between different students at the University. Sport, arts, advocacy and dialogue activities are all used to attract student participation and to promote values of active tolerance, understanding and acceptance of diversity among students, and in broader society.

Commenting on the importance of the Club, HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein said: “Violence always has such negative impacts, and wastes so much precious talent and resources. This Club is an impressive example of students showing leadership and commitment to play their part to address issues in their own community. With their variety of activities, and with the University’s excellent support, I am confident that these youth leaders will be effective ambassadors of peace, leading changes in attitudes and behaviour for the benefit of everyone.”

HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein and HE Prof. Ekhleif Tarawneh also presented certificates of appreciation to University officials and volunteers supporting the Club.
