Programmes: Sport For Peace for Youth
In 2013, Generations For Peace first implemented its programmes in Rwanda, with activities running in multiple locations around the country. Its Sport For Peace For Youth Programme targets youth from various ethnic groups and backgrounds in Kirehe, Nyakarambi, Ngoma, Kibungo, Rubavu, and Nyanza.
Rwanda is comprised largely of three ethnic groups: Hutu hold the vast majority, with Tutsi and Twa falling far below them in terms of population size. Tensions between the groups – particularly Hutu and Tutsi – remain high, even nearly 25 years after the Rwandan Genocide, in which over 800,000 Rwandans were killed. Generations For Peace programming around the country works with youth to foster social cohesion, tolerance, and acceptance between members of each group, aiming to build peace and transform conflict in their communities.
